. B A C K G R O U N D .

History: Born in a Gilder breeding house in Arcadia, Azazel has no surname and no recorded family. At the age of six, he was put on the slave market and sold to a merchant named Gavlin Raavlier, who used him along with two other older Gilders to power his airship. Suffering abuse at the hands of Gavlin for twelve years, he escaped one day while their ship was harbored in Ashmire. But unlike all the other times he'd tried to escape, this time he didn't get caught, thanks to the help of a woman named Lithenya who hid him while Gavlin had the city searched. At eighteen years old, Zel was so starved that there was barely any meat left on him, and so bruised and cut up with so many broken bones healed incorrectly that it was a wonder he could walk at all.

Lithenya took him to the Underground. Their best medics and healers fixed his injuries, though it took much more time for him to get used to doing anything without permission. While he slowly put more meat on his bones through plenty of meals a day all but forced on him, Lithenya insisted that he be trained to defend himself. She taught him basic hand-to-hand fighting principles, but more importantly, she taught him how to shoot a gun. The deeper Zel sank into the Underground, the more he learned about the secret operations that went on, and that Lithenya herself was one of the Faceless, which she revealed to him when it was decided among the Cornerstone's council that he would become one as well.

After proving himself a capable assassin, Zel requested to be stationed in Rithika, where the majority of the surviving Lorlonians lived. Lithenya visited him several times each year, until one year Zel simply received a note informing him that Lithenya had been killed--no details of how or why or where, top secret information and all. Angry that he hadn't been there with her, that maybe if he hadn't been selfish in wanting to come to Rithika she'd still be alive, he sank into a vengeful rage and hunted down his long-time owner Gavlin, gutting him in his bed and taking his Gilder slaves to the Underground.

After meeting Nikolas Ascher, it didn't take much to convince him to leave Rithika. Nikolas was interesting company, and though he threatened to out him as a Gilder on a fairly regular basis at first, Zel would have shot him in his sleep had he ever treated him like a slave. As the years wore on, however, the threats fell away to teasing and harmless bickering, and Zel spent months clearing it with the Cornerstone's council in Arcadia to allow Nikolas to join the Underground. Although many people wonder if Nikolas and Azazel have a relationship of a romantic nature, and even though they often fight like a married couple, they have not and never will be intimate on that level. Nikolas would never stoop so low as to sleep with a Gilder, and Zel knows this. Zel also knows that he doesn't have many years left after so many were spent wasting away his life energy.

Personality: Azazel has a dry, witty sense of humor. To enemies of the Underground, he's clever, cunning and ruthless, and has a mean vengeful streak. Anyone who treats him like a slave is liable to end up dead. To everyday common folk, however, he's a whole different person, calm and friendly and easily drawn into conversation. His harsh bickering and name-calling are generally reserved for Nikolas, but exceptions can certainly be made.

Appearance: Azazel dresses casually, no matter how much Nikolas tries to get him to change his wardrobe to something less ruffian. Common attire suits Zel just fine, though, and he's usually seen wearing a loose long-sleeved undershirt and plain breeches. Rarely does he ever go anywhere without his round-rimmed rose-tinted sunspecs and some kind of covering to conceal the Gilder mark on his brow--a hat or head wrap or hooded jacket. He can easily go a few days without shaving and barely runs his fingers through his hair each morning before going out, but as much as Nikolas swears up and down that he does it just to annoy him, Zel honestly doesn't care that much about his looks.
